Greetings From Superintendent Brunson

Greetings Elementary School District 159 Families, Staff, and Community Members,

As we come to the close of another remarkable school year, I want to take a moment to share my heartfelt gratitude and excitement for all that we have accomplished together. This year has been a powerful example of what is possible when we lead with equity, center our students, and embrace collaboration with our Board of Education, staff, and school community.

Together, we’ve celebrated academic milestones, elevated student voices, and strengthened our school communities. Our students have risen to challenges with resilience and curiosity, our teachers and staff have continued to pour their hearts into this work, and our families and partners have shown unwavering support.

Here are just a few highlights that fill me with immense pride:

📚 Academic Growth
We achieved increased student growth across all content areas, with double-digit gains in district-wide math and primary reading achievement. These improvements reflect our strategic focus on targeted instruction, small group learning, inquiry-based approaches, and a robust multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS). Through enhanced planning, effective curriculum implementation, inclusive learning environments, and personalized professional development, we are building stronger and more equitable pathways to success for all learners.

🎓 Student Success
From our STEAM Fair to championship sports teams to performing arts showcases, our students have wowed us with their talents, creativity, and leadership. This year’s graduating class is heading off to high schools with confidence and big dreams. We couldn’t be prouder. Fly Eagles Fly!

🤝 Family & Community Engagement
Our Parent University events, listening sessions, and school-based celebrations brought families into the heart of our schools. We know that students thrive when families are engaged partners in their learning. We also launched a (BPAC) Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee this year. Through our Timberidge partnership we updated the Resource Room with materials, technology and are now offering after school tutoring led by scholars from District 227.

💬 Student Voice & Belonging
We have expanded our efforts to ensure every student feels seen, valued, and heard. Student-led initiatives around equity, wellness, and cultural celebrations helped shape the climate in our schools and reminded us all why this work matters so deeply. This included student listening sessions, SEL support groups in middle school and individualized daily check-ins.

🛠️ Facilities & Innovation
We are continuing to transform our learning spaces into 21st-century environments that inspire creativity and innovation. This summer, we are improving HVAC systems at both Sieden Prairie and Neil Armstrong. Armstrong will also receive an updated Media Lab. All K–2 classrooms will be outfitted with new desks and chairs, and our Media Centers have been filled with culturally responsive, high-interest books. These updates reflect our belief that every child deserves access to high-quality, inclusive facilities.

🧠 Wellness & Support
With the launch of our Behavioral Health Teams and social-emotional learning initiatives, we’ve prioritized student well-being in powerful, meaningful ways. Extensive training in restorative practices, PBIS, MTSS, and Second Step ensures we see and support the whole child not just as a learner, but as a human being.

🌱 Preschool Expansion

This year, we expanded our preschool programs with the addition of two classrooms at Sieden Prairie, opening new doors for our youngest learners. Research consistently shows that high quality early childhood education lays a strong foundation for future academic achievement, social-emotional development, and lifelong success. By increasing access to preschool, we are helping to close opportunity gaps before they begin and ensuring every child in our community has the best possible start.

📈 Strategic Plan Progress
This year, we are working to complete our new 2025–2030 Strategic Plan, rooted in equity, excellence, and innovation. Our work was guided by five bold Strategic Priorities:

  • Learning Environment
  • Human-Centered
  • Teaching & Learning
  • Wellness
  • Community

We will continue to use data, feedback, and community voice to monitor progress, celebrate wins, and adapt where needed, all with our students at the center.

We have much to celebrate, but our work is not done. Equity is not a destination, it’s a commitment. As we look to the future, we remain focused on eliminating barriers, expanding access, and ensuring every child, in every classroom, in every school has what they need to succeed and thrive.

Thank you for believing in our mission, supporting our schools, and championing our students. Your partnership is the foundation of our success, and I am endlessly grateful for the trust you place in us.

Wishing you a joyful, restful summer filled with reflection and renewal. We can’t wait to see what the next chapter holds, we will continue to thrive in ESD 159.
Our first day of school will be August 25, 2025.

Be Well,

Dr. Tiffany S. Brunson
